Paid

by Kathleen McGookey

When sorrow knocks again, for my mother, I want to say
I’ve already paid. For ten years I watched my father get
sicker, stumble, fall, then lose his voice. Then worse.
Then my own baby almost…. Enough misfortune for one
family. Now who do I complain to, show my poor ragged
heart? Look, I want to say, I thought we had a deal.
“...we have been born here to witness and celebrate. We wonder at our purpose for living. Our purpose
is to perceive the fantastic. Why have a universe if there is no audience?” — Ray Bradbury
